Blacks

An early photo of Blacks Delicatessen (on the extreme left of the photo).

Previously ‘Kestrels’, a dress shop, which amalgamated two premises. Before that, Budd (and earlier Rice), were both Taxi businesses. We do not know what ‘Harris’ sold. ‘Sharlands’, now ‘30 The Square’, became Woolcombe Beer Watts Solicitors, but much earlier than that, there were Refreshment Rooms here. Even earlier, the 1891 Census lists Elizabeth Jeffery as a Coffee Tavern Keeper. Third from the left on the top photo is our much lamented Post Offce, run by six generations of the Thorn family.
